Beta Series Small Batch No. 2

Introducing Small Batch #2 of the exclusive Beta Series, a collection that honors the legacy of past call makers. The Small Batch Beta series concepts were chosen and developed by attendees of our 2024 Small Batch Bash. The concept was to take past call makers' style, and have John personally add individual design elements, giving it a distinct J. Stephens twist.
This call pays tribute to designs by Chick Major, reimagined with a modern edge and meticulous craftsmanship.
Chick Made Calls 1939-1974 in Stuttgart, AR. His early model calls had “Dixie” stamped on the barrel for the name of his calls, “Dixie Mallard” Calls.
This call is CNC turned and milled out of Cocobolo. John has added a brass band to the front of the barrel close to the mouthpiece and used an antiquing paint process to make the call look old and used. He also applied his trademark painted insert groove in brown.
“When I think of Old calls from Stuttgart, I immediately think of Chick Majors and Clyde Hancocks' Calls. Considering that their calls were popular to hunt with and were hunted hard, I thought it would be cool to add the band to the mouthpiece to make it look like it was placed on it as a repair from cracking, along with a weathered paint application that gives the call a real vintage and heavily used appearance.” ~ John S.
A button loop-style leather call holder has also been placed on it to simulate the call keepers' style that was used at that time.
With only 25 units made, this is more than just a call—it’s a piece of history, a collector’s dream, and a functional tool for the field. Don’t miss your chance to own a part of this limited-edition series. Once they’re gone, they’re gone!
